2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee: Everything You Need To Know

How can you continue to improve upon legendary greatness? Not sure? You should consult the 2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee! The latest edition of the Most Awarded SUV Ever (Jeep® Grand Cherokee has received more awards over its lifetime than any other SUV) is sure to impress - this legend has been re-engineered for the future and we can’t wait to tell you everything you need to know about the 2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee.

Overview and What’s New

The Jeep Grand Cherokee for 2022 underwent extensive changes in the cabin (including an optional extra row of seating), while maintaining most of its distinct and loved exterior from the previous generation (which is actually still available in 2022 - more on that to come). The Grand Cherokee L - the three row version, is the archetype for the 2022 model platform. This allows the Grand Cherokee to not only compete (and win) against the standard SUV segment, like the Toyota 4Runner, VW Atlas, Ford Edge, GMC Terrain, Hyundai Santa Fe and the like but also against three row crossovers like the Hyundai Palisade, Kia Telluride, Ford Explorer, Toyota Highlander and Mazda CX-9.

As always, Jeep delivers on the implicit Grand Cherokee promise with on-road comfort, convenience and luxury paired seamlessly with off-road capabilities and we plan to fill you in on all the details of just how they’ve accomplished this for 2022.

Choice!

To make sure there is a Grand Cherokee that meets everyone’s needs and satisfies their wants, there are 4 types of Grand Cheerokes, up-to 7 available trim levels for each of the 4 versions, 3 different all-wheel drive systems, 3 engine types - including, for the first time ever, a plug-in hybrid option - and the option for a 3rd row!

While most vehicles have some choice of trim level, engine or drive systems, none can compete with the sprawling buffet of Grand Cherokee options.

Allow us to simplify your options with a summary of all things 2022 Grand Cherokee:

The 4 Types of 2022 Jeep Grand Cherokees:

Firstly, it is important for us to explain the general differences between the 4 available Jeep Grand Cherokees for 2022 - here is your initial cheat sheet.

  • Grand Cherokee WK - as mentioned above, 2022 is a redesign year for the Grand Cherokee - with the exception of the WK version, which is a continuation of the previous generation of the model and therefore is identical to the 2021 iteration. For everything you need to know about the Grand Cherokee WK version, please check out our article on the 2021 Grand Cherokee here: https://www.carhub.ca/blog/2021-jeep-grand-cherokee-everything-you-should-know/  with the exception that the only available trim levels in 2022 are Laredo, Altitude, Limited and Limited X

  • Grand Cherokee - the newly redesigned for 2022 - larger and with additional luxury trim levels - the 5 seater, gas powered mainstay for the next two versions of the Grand Cherokee

Jeep Cherokee L Interior

  • Grand Cherokee L - the 6 / 7 seater option first introduced as a trim in 2021 and used as a basis for the platform of the Grand Cherokee in 2022

Note: detailed differences between the Jeep Grand Cherokee WK, All-New Grand Cherokee, Grand Cherokee 4xe and Grand Cherokee L will be sprinkled throughout each category as we move along.

Power and Performance: Engine, Transmission and 4x4

The Grand Cherokee, Grand Cherokee WK and Grand Cherokee L come standard with a 3.6L PentastarTM V6 with Engine Stop/ Start (ESS) technology, Variable Valve Timing (VVT) and 8-speed automatic transmission rated at 293 hp and 260 lb-ft of torque.

Overland and higher trim levels on the L model allow for an optional upgrade to the 5.7L HEMI® V8 with FuelSaver Multi-Displacement System (MDS) Technology, VVT and 8-speed automatic transmission rated at 357 hp and 390 lb-ft of torque.

Of course there is also the new 4xe plug-in hybrid with a 2.0L I-4 DOHC Turbo PHEV engine with 8-speed automatic PHEV transmission delivering 375 hp and 470 lb-ft. of torque, offering an estimated 40 km of all-electric range.

The three all-wheel drive options are determined by the trim level that is chosen:

The Quadra-Trac I® 4x4 is always engaged combined with a brake lock differential for all-weather capability and peace of mind.

Quadra-Trac II® 4x4 features a two-speed low transfer case that uses input from a variety of sensors in order to determine tire slip at the earliest possible moment and take corrective action.

When tire slippage is detected, as much as 100% of available torque is instantly routed to the axle with the most traction.

Quadra-Drive® II with rear electronic limited slip differential is a full-time 4x4 system so it’s always active. It is our most advanced 4x4 system and delivers superior all-weather capability by transferring up to 100% of available torque to a single rear wheel if needed.

Fuel Economy

The standard engine option has a combined fuel consumption of 10.9L/100km and the 4xe plug-in hybrid 4.2 L/100km.

What’s on the inside?

Available with 5, 6 or 7 seats, the base Laredo models offer the essentials like heated seats and charging ports, middle range trims like Altitude, Limited and Trailhawk offer leather heated seats, meanwhile the upscale Summit and Overland trims will add luxuries like quilted leather upholstery, open-pore wood trim, and high-tech digital displays.
